BAND CAMP: 3rd Week of August, Every Year
What you need to know about Marching Band Camp
Band Camp is a tradition across high schools and universities with marching bands.
The week of Band Camp is where the marching season really begins. Students learn marching fundamentals, start building the field show, get to know their section, and spend valuable time rehearsing as one full Marching Kangs band.
Save the Third Week of August
Band Camp is held the third week of August, before school begins.
Leadership Retreat — Sunday before Band Camp
For section leaders, drum majors and drum majors in training.
Marching Band Camp — Monday–Friday
For the full Marching Kangs band.
Specific times, uniform fittings and other details will be shared as camp approaches.
What Happens at Band Camp?
Students work with Mr. Kruse, marching coaches and student leaders on:
• Marching fundamentals and technique
• Music and playing while marching
• Positions — or “dots” — and formations on the field
• Movement, spacing and timing
• Putting the field show together as a full band
AND -- VERY IMPORTANT -- LOTS OF UNIFORM FITTINGS!
New to marching? That’s exactly what Band Camp is for. Many students arrive with little or no marching experience.
What Should Students Bring?
Plan for active days outside:
• Instrument and music as directed
• Large water bottle
• Ear protection
• Comfortable athletic clothes and supportive shoes
• Sunscreen
• Hat and sunglasses
• A good breakfast and plenty of energy
Parent Pro Tip: This is not the week to break in brand-new shoes.
Parents: We Need You, Too!
There are no overnight tents at Band Camp — but we need LOTS of shade tents!
Band + Jazz Boosters help keep students and coaches supported throughout the week with shade tents, water, snacks, meals, supplies, first aid, and volunteers.
And -- bonus -- volunteers get to hang out at the field and watch the magic happen!
Watch BoosterHub for opportunities to lend a tent, donate supplies, bring food or water, or volunteer during camp. Even a short shift helps.
Why Band Camp Matters
Band Camp is about more than learning the show. Students meet people across grades and sections, student leaders step into their roles, and incoming freshmen get a chance to find their place at LWHS before the first day of school.
Parent Pro Tip: Put the third week of August on your family calendar early. Band Camp is one of the most important — and most fun — weeks of the Marching Kangs season.
